Work on the construction of the housing for the replica, which is in the same valley as the original cave.

The work on building the replica is being carried out by the company ZK Productions from Montignac in France.

The goals are to still better conserve the original sanctuary, if one might say so, and to spread the news of this cultural resource, without putting it at risk. A replica of the cave is currently being constructed at the entrance to the Sastarrain Valley, and is situated some 600 metres before the original cave. The visitors' car park is located in the village of Zestoa, which is 1200 metres from the original cave.

Before the commencement of the work a special plan of the whole valley was made, in order to fully protect it. The builing, which houses the replica, was planned and is being directed by the architect José María Alberdi. The replica itself is being constructed by René Sanson, of the company ZK Productions of Montignac. The manager in charge is the professor Dr. Jesús Altuna.

The replica will be inaugurated in 2003.
