A few days after the discovery of the Palaeolithic sanctuary at Ekain, J. M. de Barandiaran and J. Altuna carried out a trial dig at the entrance to the cave and discovered a prehistoric settlement. However, their attention was first drawn to the cave drawings, and a study of them was published in 1969. The work was published in the magazine Munibe, which is a part of the Aranzadi Science Society. In 1978 J. Altuna and J. Apellániz carried out a new study of the figures and their results were also published in Munibe. Later a series of archaeological digs were carried out, which lasted from 1969 to 1975. The first three were carried out by Barandiaran and the last three by Altuna. |
